About Obuasi Municipal District
Obuasi Municipality’s Path to Progress: Development Projects and Leadership Confirmation of MCE Faustilove Appiah Kannin
Obuasi Municipality in the Ashanti Region continues to evolve as a pivotal center of governance and development, combining its rich gold-mining heritage with forward-looking social infrastructure. Established on December 15, 2003, through Executive Instrument E.I. 15 and Legislative Instrument L.I. 1795, the municipality spans approximately 162.4 km² and is made up of 19 electoral areas under two zonal councils—Obuasi Central and Kunka. Positioned about 64 kilometers from Kumasi, Obuasi has earned its reputation as Ghana’s “Gold City” due to the AngloGold Ashanti Mine, one of the continent’s most lucrative mineral ventures.
Beyond its economic significance, Obuasi boasts a dynamic development agenda. Among its flagship initiatives is the near-complete rehabilitation of the KNUST-Obuasi campus, a strategic educational investment at Toy Town poised to extend tertiary access to local communities. Funded jointly by the DACF, IGF, and AngloGold Ashanti, the project is 98% complete and is expected to accelerate youth capacity-building across the region.
Healthcare infrastructure has also received a boost through the construction of a new CHPS compound and nurses' quarters at Apitikoko. This 62% complete facility aims to expand primary healthcare accessibility, with revised delivery timelines pegged for November 2025. Similarly, the launch of the Dokyiwa Soap Factory—currently 99% complete—marks a milestone in local economic empowerment, particularly for women-led entrepreneurship and agro-processing within the municipality.
Adding to its innovation drive, the municipality is working to finalize the Obuasi Robotic Centre housed at the Obuasi Senior High Technical School. The center is designed to spark STEM interest and nurture robotics proficiency among youth, though design revisions have slightly shifted initial timelines.
These developmental strides now coincide with a fresh chapter in leadership. On May 21, 2025, Faustilove Appiah Kannin was officially confirmed as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Obuasi West. A two-time parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), she secured an overwhelming 92.86% approval from assembly members and government appointees in an election supervised by the Electoral Commission. Her endorsement was met with jubilant celebration, attended by political leaders, clergy, traditional authorities, and her father, Nana Kofi Konadu, Kyidomhene of Manso Nkwanta.
In her acceptance speech, Ms. Appiah Kannin expressed deep gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for her nomination and promised to spearhead inclusive governance that transcends party lines. She vowed to align the municipality's development trajectory with President Mahama’s resetting agenda, focusing on equitable infrastructure, health and education reforms, and participatory leadership.
