About Ledzokuku Municipal District
Strategic Urban Interventions Driving Ledzokuku’s Municipal Transformation
The Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly (LeKMA), located in Ghana’s Greater Accra Region, has become a beacon of progressive urban governance since its establishment in 2008. Encompassing approximately 54 square kilometers and housing a population of over 240,000, LeKMA was carved out of the former Tema District to improve administrative proximity and enhance service delivery across Teshie and adjoining communities. The Assembly is mandated to facilitate sustainable development through the delivery of basic services, infrastructure development, environmental management, and participatory local governance.
At the helm of this transformation is Israel Adjetey Otchweemah, the current Municipal Chief Executive, unanimously confirmed by Assembly Members in May 2025. His administration places emphasis on deepening citizen engagement, expanding access to quality infrastructure, and building resilient systems for health and education. Under his leadership, Ledzokuku has embarked on several strategic projects aimed at addressing systemic challenges while positioning the municipality as a model of inclusive development.
One of the most impactful initiatives is the construction of a 10-kilometer drainage network targeting flood-prone corridors such as King Kotey Street, Palm Tree Avenue, and Coffee Street. This intervention, funded through the District Assembly Common Fund and internally generated resources, is designed to mitigate the persistent threat of flooding and unlock future road development across the municipality.
In education, the Assembly has partnered with the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to deliver a fully equipped kindergarten block at Dar-Es-Salaam Primary B School in Teshie. This initiative has been complemented by a pilot program to install solar lighting systems in public schools to address poor lighting conditions that impair student learning. The MCE has further appealed to private and corporate institutions to support school infrastructure across the municipality.
The health and emergency sectors have also received significant investment with the ongoing construction of a National Claims Processing Centre under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), aimed at serving both Ledzokuku and the neighboring Krowor district. In addition, a Municipal Health Directorate, Ambulance Bay, and Fire Service Bay are all under development to strengthen emergency response and improve healthcare accessibility for residents.
To combat perennial flooding and improve mobility, the Assembly has also initiated the dredging of the Sango Stream behind Toronto Washing Bay in Teshie, coupled with the construction of a new bridge. This project is part of a broader effort that has seen four additional wooden l bridges erected across key locations within the municipality to improve connectivity, boost economic activity, and increase climate resilience.
These infrastructure and service delivery milestones reflect a broader vision to transform Ledzokuku into a resilient, inclusive, and forward-looking urban municipality. With strong leadership and a commitment to collaborative governance, the Assembly continues to serve as a catalyst for localized development that meets the pressing needs of its growing population.
