About Asunafo North Municipal District
Asunafo North Municipal is one of the six districts in Ghana’s Ahafo Region, with Goaso as its capital. Originally part of the larger Asunafo District created in 1988, it was split in 2003 to form Asunafo North and Asunafo South, and later elevated to municipal status in 2008. The municipality spans approximately 1,093.7 square kilometers, with nearly 390 square kilometers covered by forest reserves, including Ayum, Bonsambepo, and Bonkoni.
The population, as of the 2021 census, stands at around 150,198, with a fairly balanced gender distribution. The area is known for its semi-deciduous forest, rich in economic timber species, and a climate that supports double maxima rainfall—ideal for agriculture. Cocoa, plantain, cassava, maize, and cocoyam are among the major crops cultivated, alongside emerging livestock and aquaculture activities.
Goaso, Mim, and Akrodie are key urban centers, with Goaso serving as the administrative and commercial hub. The municipality is actively engaged in development initiatives, including sanitation campaigns, agricultural training, and infrastructure projects. Leadership under the Municipal Chief Executive, currently Hon. Joseph Akparibo, emphasizes citizen participation and strategic planning to improve livelihoods and promote inclusive growth.
Asunafo North Municipal has undertaken several impactful projects in recent years that reflect its commitment to infrastructure, education, health, and sanitation. One notable initiative is the construction of a mechanized water system, which has improved access to clean water in underserved communities. In the education sector, the municipality completed multiple classroom blocks, including a 6-unit classroom facility and a CHPS compound to support health outreach in rural areas.
Another key project is the development of a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Master Plan, launched under the ANANAD Initiative, which outlines strategic actions to expand sanitation infrastructure, improve hygiene practices, and strengthen institutional WASH services across schools and healthcare facilities. Additionally, the municipality has invested in solid waste management systems and sanitation campaigns to enhance environmental health and reduce disease outbreaks.
Since assuming office, he has prioritized sanitation, infrastructure, and youth empowerment, aligning municipal goals with national development policies. His tenure has seen the rollout of the WASH Master Plan, expansion of educational facilities, and improvements in healthcare delivery. Known for his accessibility and commitment to community dialogue, Hon. Akparibo continues to work closely with Assembly Members, traditional leaders, and civil society groups to foster unity and drive progress across the municipality.
