About Yilo Krobo Municipal District
Yilo Krobo Municipality Advances Development Agenda
The Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, one of the 33 districts in Ghana's Eastern Region and among the country’s 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), continues to reinforce its role as a regional development hub.
With Somanya as its administrative capital, the municipality covers an estimated 511 square kilometers and shares boundaries with Lower Manya Krobo, Fanteakwa North, Shai Osudoku, Akuapem North, and New Juaben South. According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Yilo Krobo has a population of 122,705, comprising 59,656 males and 63,049 females.
Driven by a vision to align infrastructure, commerce, and civic inclusion, the Assembly is currently implementing four strategic projects aimed at transforming its physical and economic landscape. One of the flagship initiatives is the redevelopment of the Agormanya Market, where 188 lockable stores are under construction.
This intervention is poised to modernize the region’s commercial infrastructure, enhance trading conditions, and provide secure spaces for local entrepreneurs.
Complementing the commercial upgrade is the establishment of a Business Resource Centre within the Assembly’s premises. Designed to support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), the Centre will offer advisory services and serve as a vital incubator for entrepreneurship and job creation—especially among the youth.
Road infrastructure has also seen critical attention. The Assembly is undertaking bituminous surfacing of strategic feeder routes including the Canaan and Kpanyas corridors. Notable among ongoing rehabilitation works are the Atua–Adjikpo–Yokunya Road and the Nuaso–Kpong Quarters Junction stretch—both vital to regional mobility and economic access.
To mitigate the recurrent threat of flooding in vulnerable communities, the Assembly has initiated the construction of box culverts and stormwater drains in areas such as Manaam. This flood control effort is part of a broader resilience strategy to protect lives, property, and infrastructure investments in urban zones.
