Leadership Spotlight: Chereponi District

District Chief Executive: Hon. Amadu Kofi Sheini

Appointed in early 2025, Hon. Amadu Kofi Sheini leads the Chereponi District Assembly with a focus on educational infrastructure, peacebuilding, and inclusive development. His administration emphasizes collaboration with traditional authorities, youth empowerment, and strategic investment in basic services. Under his leadership, the district has prioritized safety in schools, improved administrative capacity, and supported community-driven initiatives to foster stability and growth.

Chereponi District, located in the southeastern part of Ghana’s North East Region, was carved out of the former Saboba-Chereponi District in 2008. It spans approximately 1,080 square kilometers and shares boundaries with Gushegu Municipal to the west, Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri to the north, Saboba District to the south, and the Republic of Togo to the east, bordered by the River Oti.

The district comprises one Town Council—Chereponi—and five Area Councils: Wenchiki, Tombo, Tambong, Nansoni, and Wonjuga. As of the 2021 census, the population stands at 87,176, with a fairly balanced gender distribution.

The district is predominantly rural, with agriculture as the mainstay of the economy. Crops such as maize, millet, groundnuts, and rice dominate farming activities, while small-scale trading and livestock rearing supplement household incomes. Despite infrastructure challenges, especially in road and energy access, the district continues to make progress through targeted interventions.

Under Hon. Sheini’s leadership, four key development projects have been launched. First, the construction of a fence wall around Chereponi Senior High School was initiated to improve student safety and protect school property. This project, supported by the PTA and traditional leaders including the Yaa Naa, reflects a strong community-government partnership. Second, the rehabilitation of the District Assembly’s temporary administration block and the DCD’s official residence is underway, funded through the District Assembly Common Fund to enhance administrative efficiency.

Third, the district is participating in an aquaculture pilot initiative in small reservoirs such as Nansoni and Tombu, creating new livelihood opportunities for youth and women through fish farming. Fourth, the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) project, launched by HOLIDO with EU support, aims to restore peace, empower women, and promote social cohesion among minority groups like the Fulbe.

These projects reflect Chereponi’s commitment to inclusive development, education, and peacebuilding. With continued collaboration among stakeholders, the district is poised to overcome its challenges and unlock new opportunities for growth.
