At the center of these developments is Hon. Sugri Muniru, confirmed as Municipal Chief Executive in April 2025 with 96% Assembly support. Known for his background in education and strategic project management, Hon. Muniru has quickly demonstrated a commitment to excellence. His negotiation of transport fare reductions is a testament to his responsiveness to residents’ concerns and his hands-on leadership. With a clear stance against mediocrity and a focus on collaborative governance, his tenure is shaping a dynamic era for Yendi.
Yendi Municipal District
Yendi Municipal, in the Northern Region of Ghana, continues to evolve as a cultural, administrative, and developmental hub. Historically rooted in the legacy of the East Dagomba District Council, Yendi rose to municipal status in 2008, and has since been reshaped through regional reforms such as the creation of Mion District in 2012. With the Greenwich Meridian cutting across its settlements and serving as the seat of the revered Ya-Na, Yendi stands as the political and spiritual heart of the Dagbon Kingdom.
The municipality is home to over 154,000 residents, predominantly engaged in agriculture across rural landscapes. To bolster socio-economic growth, the Assembly has rolled out a blend of national programs and local initiatives. These range from enhancing education through Free SHS and the Ghana School Feeding Programme, to improving agricultural yield via the Planting for Food and Jobs and PERD initiatives.
Industrialization and water security are addressed through One District One Factory and One Village One Dam, while sanitation and climate resilience are advanced through Community-Led Total Sanitation campaigns, tree nursery programs, and disability-inclusive WASH infrastructure. Livelihood empowerment and access to healthcare are being strengthened through NHIS enrollment and LEAP subsidies.
