Hon. Rebecca Chissah: Driving Inclusive Development Across Upper West Akim
Upper West Akim District, situated in the south-western part of Ghana’s Eastern Region, emerged in 2011 through Legislative Instrument 2049, carved out of the West Akim Municipal Assembly. With Adeiso as the administrative capital, the district spans roughly 342.3 square kilometers and shares borders with districts from the Central and Greater Accra Regions, including Ayensuano, West Akim, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Ga South, and Awutu-Afutu Senya. As of 2019, the district had an estimated population of 105,161—comprising 51,529 males and 53,632 females.
Agriculture forms the backbone of Upper West Akim’s economy, engaging over 60% of the active population in the cultivation of cassava, maize, plantain, pineapple, and oil palm. Livestock such as poultry, goats, and pigs also thrive within the district. Complementing its economic activity is a network of 172 public and 97 private schools, alongside 25 health facilities including 21 active CHPS zones—though challenges in sanitation and infrastructure persist.

Key Projects.
Upper West Akim has recorded significant development strides. Between 2017 and 2020, the Assembly successfully executed 72 development projects, ranging from education infrastructure to health care enhancement. The projects also focused on building and expanding school blocks, mechanizing boreholes with overhead tanks, rehabilitating slaughterhouses, and constructing ultra-modern toilet facilities in key communities.
Commitment to healthcare has been evident in the expansion of CHPS zones and the enhancement of public health centers, often through direct engagement with local communities to identify pressing health concerns. In the education sector, shift systems in public schools are no more while creating more conducive learning environments.
Beyond physical infrastructure, youth and women’s groups are supported in skills training and job creation to empower local livelihoods. The collaborative approach not only reinforces community ownership of development but also strengthens the NDC’s grassroots presence.Member of Parliament Emmanuel Drah has further amplified the district’s potential by advocating for a transformative petroleum hub project. Valued at $60 billion, the proposed initiative is expected to create approximately 780,000 jobs, boost national GDP by 70%, and significantly improve fuel security across Ghana. Such advocacy complements the developmental vision set forth by the DCE and her team.
As the NDC positions itself for the 2028 elections, Hon. Rebecca Chissah’s inclusive leadership and strategic development agenda may play a pivotal role in galvanizing support, sustaining momentum, and elevating the district’s visibility across the
