About Upper Manya Krobo District
Upper Manya Krobo District Profile & Leadership Update
The Upper Manya Krobo District Assembly is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies in Ghana, and one of thirty-three Municipalities and Districts in the Eastern Region. Covering an estimated 894 square kilometers, its administrative capital is Asesewa.
The district shares boundaries with Lower Manya Krobo Municipal to the south, Fanteakwa North District to the west, Asuogyaman District to the east, and Kwahu Afram Plains South District Assembly to the north. This strategic location positions the district as a key conduit for Eastern Region development, with active interventions in education, water and sanitation, judicial access, and environmental sustainability.
Recent development efforts highlight the Assembly’s commitment to improving the quality of life across communities. At Ponponya Fontem, an education and sanitation initiative funded by the Japanese Embassy under the Grassroots Human Security Project has led to the construction of a new classroom block and a two-unit KVIP toilet facility. This project aims to enhance Junior High School enrollment and hygiene standards for pupils.
In response to widespread water scarcity affecting over 250 communities, the Assembly has partnered with Ark Development Organization and Australia Aid to revitalize Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) committees. This collaboration includes drilling and repairing boreholes, providing community training, and establishing local foundations for sustainable maintenance.
Justice delivery has also seen a boost with the commissioning of the new Court Complex in Asesewa by the Chief Justice, in partnership with the District Chief Executive. The facility promises improved access to legal services and a strengthening of district governance structures.
On the environmental front, the District Chief Executive led the local participation in the National Tree Planting Exercise, with coconut seedlings planted to advance climate resilience and reforestation efforts.
