About Upper Denkyira East Municipal District
Upper Denkyira East
The Upper Denkyira East Municipal, situated in the heart of Ghana’s Central Region, stands as a vital administrative and economic hub with Dunkwa-on-Offin as its capital. Established in 2007 under Legislative Instrument (LI) 1877, the municipality covers approximately 1,020 square kilometers, constituting about ten percent of the Central Region’s total landmass.
It is home to over 110,000 residents as per the 2021 census, who rely heavily on agriculture, mining, timber processing, and trading for their livelihoods. Cocoa and oil palm cultivation dominate its agricultural landscape, while the region’s rich Birimian and Tarkwaian geological formations support notable gold mining activities. Timber species such as Mahogany and Wawa also contribute to its economic vibrancy.
The municipality operates within a semi-equatorial climate, experiencing two major rainy seasons annually between May and June, and September to November. While its natural resource base is strong, Upper Denkyira East faces challenges such as illegal mining (galamsey), deforestation, inadequate road infrastructure, and sanitation concerns, all of which demand concerted attention.
At the helm of the municipality’s development agenda is Hon. George Anane Coleman, the current Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). He plays a pivotal role in shaping the district's growth trajectory, guiding policy implementation and coordinating with stakeholders to address local needs. Under his leadership, the municipality has embarked on several impactful initiatives aimed at improving living conditions and enhancing economic opportunities.
He previously served as the National Organiser in the Denkyira East Constuituency
A landmark project is the implementation of the WASH and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) master plan, developed in collaboration with IRC Ghana and the Anesvad Foundation. This project brings integrated water, sanitation, and hygiene services to five communities, primarily focused on preventing diseases linked to poor sanitation. In a bid to bolster the judicial system, the municipality has also completed the construction of a High Court building in Dunkwa-on-Offin, a key addition that enhances access to legal services for residents.
Health infrastructure has seen improvement through the completion of a three-unit doctor’s bungalow, addressing longstanding accommodation challenges faced by medical professionals. Additionally, the Buabin Oil Palm Outgrower Project, supported by French and German development partners, offers long-term agricultural empowerment, enabling local farmers to diversify incomes through sustainable oil palm cultivation.
