Hon. Alhaji Adam Abubakar Takoro, Metropolitan Chief Executive -Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA)

MCE
Hon. Alhaji Adam Abubakar Takoro assumed office as Metropolitan Chief Executive in April 2025, following unanimous endorsement by all 58 assembly members. A seasoned local government leader, he rose through the ranks from unit committee member to assemblyman and presiding member before his mayoral appointment.

His leadership is marked by a strong commitment to stakeholder collaboration, youth empowerment, and inclusive development. He has pledged to work closely with traditional authorities, civil society organizations, and opinion leaders to drive Tamale’s transformation.

TaMA has launched several key initiatives. These include the commissioning of an integrated recycling and compost plant to improve waste management, expansion of waste container distribution across the city, and donation of furniture to basic schools to enhance learning environments. The “Operation Lighten Up Tamale” project was also introduced to improve urban lighting infrastructure and public safety. Hon. Takoro has also been recognized for championing development in healthcare, education, and infrastructure, with strong grassroots support from youth groups and community stakeholders.

Tamale remains a vital hub for education and commerce in Northern Ghana, hosting over 740 schools and a diverse population comprising Dagomba, Gonja, Mamprusi, Akan, and Dagaaba ethnic groups. The city’s strategic location and dynamic leadership continue to position it as a cornerstone of regional development.

Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA) serves as the administrative authority for Tamale, the capital of Ghana’s Northern Region and one of the fastest-growing urban centers in West Africa.

Elevated to metropolitan status in 2004, TaMA governs an area of approximately 731 square kilometers and supports a population of 374,744 as of the 2021 census. The metropolis shares boundaries with Savelugu Municipality to the north, Yendi Municipal Assembly to the east, Tolon District to the west, Central Gonja District to the southwest, and East Gonja Municipal to the south. Its terrain is generally rolling, with shallow valleys and isolated hills that pose minimal barriers to development.
