About Talensi Municipal District

Talensi District is located in the Upper East Region of Ghana, with Tongo as its administrative capital. It was officially established in 2012 through Legislative Instrument 2110, following the split of the former Talensi-Nabdam District. Covering a land area of approximately 867 square kilometers, the district shares boundaries with Nabdam to the north, Bolgatanga Municipal to the west, East Mamprusi to the southeast, West Mamprusi to the southwest, and Bawku West to the east.

The district has a population of 87,021 as per the 2021 census, with a nearly equal gender distribution. Agriculture is the backbone of the local economy, employing over 90% of the population. Major crops include millet, sorghum, maize, rice, and groundnuts. Talensi also has active small-scale mining and quarrying operations, contributing to both employment and environmental challenges. The district is known for its rich cultural heritage, scenic landscapes, and tourism potential, including the famous Tongo Hills and Tengzug Shrine.

Four Key Development Projects

SOCO Phase 2 Development Projects
Under the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) initiative, nine community-driven projects are underway. These include CHPS compounds, school infrastructure, boreholes, sanitation facilities, and a Local Economic Development program focused on empowering women in shea butter and rice parboiling.

Education Infrastructure Expansion
The Assembly has initiated the construction and rehabilitation of classroom blocks, dormitories, and teachers’ quarters in communities like Winkogo, Kaare, and Gbeogo. These efforts aim to improve access to quality education and reduce school absenteeism.

Healthcare Facility Upgrades
Several CHPS compounds are being constructed or upgraded in communities such as Balungu, Sepaat, and Yameriga. A 20-bed capacity ward is also under construction at the Tongo Hospital to enhance healthcare delivery.

Water and Sanitation Improvements
The district has expanded its water infrastructure with mechanized boreholes, small-town water systems, and latrine construction. These projects target improved hygiene and access to potable water, especially in market centers and schools.
