About Tain Municipal District
Tain District, located in the Bono Region of Ghana, was officially established in August 2004 by Legislative Instrument (L.I. 2090), having been carved out of the larger Wenchi District. Its administrative capital is Nsawkaw, and it spans approximately 1,953 square kilometers. The district shares boundaries with Wenchi Municipal to the east, Banda District to the north, and La Côte d’Ivoire to the northwest. As of 2021, the population stood at 115,568, with a fairly balanced gender distribution.
The district’s terrain is predominantly undulating, with savannah ochrosol soils and a mix of forest-savannah vegetation. It experiences a bimodal rainfall pattern, with major rains from April to July and minor rains from mid-August to November. Agriculture is the backbone of the local economy, employing over 87% of the population. Major crops include maize, yam, cassava, groundnuts, and cashew, with livestock such as cattle, goats, and poultry also widely reared. The district is home to several tourist sites, including the Menji Crocodile Pond and the confluence of rivers Nyimpene and Tain.
Tain District is currently implementing several impactful projects. These include the construction of CHPS compounds in underserved communities such as Akore, Yabraso, and Atomfourso; classroom blocks in Nkona, Nsawkaw SHS, and Kwametenten; and a police post in Debibi. The district also benefits from the Tain Water Project, a large-scale initiative involving the construction of a weir dam on the Black Volta River to support water transmission, irrigation, and electricity generation. Additionally, Madamfo Ghana has completed four health clinics in remote villages—Tanoso Njau, Tainso, Tanokrom, and Tiadene—to improve healthcare access for over 10,000 residents.
