The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Kwasi Asante Boateng (ESQ), is a legal practitioner and the President’s nominee under the Reset Ghana . He has pledged to operate an open-door administration focused on transparency, collaboration, and holistic development.
The Sunyani West Municipal Assembly, located in the Bono Region with Odomase as its capital, was established by Legislative Instrument (LI) 1881 in November 2007 and inaugurated on February 29, 2008. Covering a land area of approximately 1,031 square kilometers, the municipality shares boundaries with Wenchi Municipal to the north, Offinso North District to the east, Sunyani Municipal to the south, Berekum East Municipal to the west, Dormaa Central and Dormaa East Districts to the southwest, and Tain District to the northwest.
According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Sunyani West has a population of 136,022, with a projected increase to 148,328 by 2025. The population is fairly balanced, with 48.76% male and 51.24% female residents. The municipality comprises about 120 settlements.
The local economy is primarily driven by agriculture, which employs 48.2% of the working population. Industry accounts for 29.1%, manufacturing 14.7%, and other sectors 8%. Educational infrastructure includes 335 institutions across all levels, while healthcare services are provided by 53 facilities, including hospitals, clinics, CHPS compounds, and maternity homes.
Sunyani West boasts 240 km of urban roads, 20 km of tarred roads, and 299 km of feeder roads. Most major settlements are connected to the national electricity grid and have access to telecommunication services from MTN, Telecel, and Airtel-Tigo. The municipality hosts several markets, including those in Odumase, Nsoatre, Chiraa, and Fiapre, which operate on daily and weekly schedules. Financial institutions such as Nsoatreman Rural Bank, Drobo Community Bank, and Capital Rural Bank serve the area, alongside widespread mobile money operations.
In 2024, the Assembly launched four exceptional development projects aimed at improving education, health, and sanitation infrastructure. These include the construction of a six-unit classroom block and an eight-seater WC toilet facility at Mantukwa; a similar six-unit classroom block and toilet facility at Kyem Amponsah, Fiapre; a four-unit teachers’ quarters with a mechanized borehole at Baah Shed, Nsoatre; and a two-bedroom semi-detached nurses’ quarters at Boffourkrom. Additionally, a mass in-situ concrete drainage system was initiated at Afrasum, Nsoatre to address flooding and improve environmental management.
