Profile of Sunyani Municipal Assembly: A Hub of Governance, Growth, and Youth Empowerment in Bono Region
Sunyani Municipal Assembly, located at the heart of Ghana’s Bono Region, is one of the twelve Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies in the region. Established on 10th March 1989 through Legislative Instrument 1473, the Assembly was part of Ghana’s broader decentralization effort under the District Assembly concept.
It originally encompassed a larger jurisdiction until Sunyani West District was carved out in November 2007. Today, the municipality spans approximately 131.9 square kilometers and shares boundaries with Sunyani West to the north, Dormaa East to the west, Asutifi South to the south, and Tano North to the east. According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Sunyani Municipality has a population of 136,022, with a nearly equal gender distribution.
The local economy is diverse and dynamic, driven by agriculture, education, health services, trade, and light industry. The municipality hosts major institutions such as the Sunyani Regional Hospital, several senior high schools, and agro-processing facilities. The Assembly has also embraced national initiatives like Planting for Food and Jobs, One District One Factory, and the Ghana School Feeding Programme to boost productivity and social welfare.
Recent development efforts have focused on inclusive urban planning and youth empowerment. Under the Healthy Cities for Adolescents (HCA-II) program, the Assembly partnered with NGOs to implement the Resilient Cities for Adolescents (RCA) project. This initiative includes the construction of a recreational center in Sunyani, the establishment of an ICT lab, and vocational training in dressmaking, hairdressing, and artistry. Over 45 young people are currently enrolled in digital mentorship and skills development programs, with plans to provide startup capital upon completion.
Leadership in Sunyani Municipality is under Hon. Vincent Antwi Agyei, who was previously the Youth Organiser of the NDC in Sunyani. His administration has prioritized adolescent-responsive strategies, inclusive governance, and collaborative development planning. Hon. Agyei has pledged to work with stakeholders across political and traditional lines to elevate Sunyani’s growth trajectory.
