About Suhum-Kraboa-Coaltar District

Suhum Municipality: Advancing Toward a Sustainable Future Under Bold Leadership

Suhum Municipal Assembly, one of the thirty-three districts in Ghana’s Eastern Region, was originally carved out of the Suhum-Kraboa-Coaltar District in 1988.

Following the creation of Ayensuano District in June 2012 from its southern portion, Suhum gained municipal status that same year. Its administrative capital, Suhum, now serves as the heartbeat of an evolving municipality committed to infrastructure development, public welfare, and long-term sustainability.

Among the most transformative projects in Suhum is the expansion of educational infrastructure, with new classroom blocks being constructed at Densuso and Suhum Methodist schools. These developments incorporate sanitation facilities and aim to accommodate rising student numbers while fostering a healthier and more conducive learning environment.

In the healthcare sector, the ongoing development of a modern health centre at Kwabena-Kumi includes staff accommodations and a water facility. Once completed, this will provide essential medical services to surrounding rural communities, bridging critical gaps in healthcare delivery.

Suhum’s economic potential is further amplified by the construction of a landmark market complex—a three-story structure that is set to elevate trading activities, support small-scale enterprises, and generate employment, especially for women and youth. Additionally, efforts to revitalize the industrial zone include plans to reactivate a long-abandoned machinery parts factory and rejuvenate the Phi-beta Vocational Centre, paving the way for vocational training and sustainable job creation.

At the helm of this ambitious transformation is Madam Lydia Ohenewa Sarah, the Municipal Chief Executive and a dedicated member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). A well-respected political figure in the Eastern Region, she has built a reputation for empowering grassroots participation and championing women’s inclusion in governance. Her previous role as Women’s Organizer for the Suhum Constituency enabled her to mobilize women across local branches, host impactful outreach programs, and foster political enthusiasm among the marginalized.

Madam Lydia Ohenewa Sarah envisions Suhum as a municipality rooted in sustainable growth, robust infrastructure, and equitable access to social services. Her focus spans education, health, sanitation, and economic empowerment, all underpinned by her belief in inclusive development. Her leadership is distinguished by compassion, proactive engagement, and a commitment to community welfare that reflects the broader values of the NDC.

The municipality’s long-term aspiration is to become a world-class sustainable city, defined by modern infrastructure, high-quality social services, environmental resilience, and a welcoming environment for investors. To support residents in times of crisis, emergency services including the Police, Fire Service, Ambulance, and NADMO remain crucial components of Suhum’s safety and disaster response strategy.
