Hon. Abudu Fuseini Gbene,District Chief Executive -Sissala West Municipal District

DCE Profile

The current District Chief Executive nominee for Sissala West is Abudu Fuseini Gbene. His nomination was part of the second batch of appointments announced by President John Dramani Mahama in April 2025. However, confirmation of his appointment is pending.

A previous nominee, Mahamud Forkah, failed to secure the required two-thirds majority during the Assembly’s vote in February 2024, receiving 18 votes in favor, 12 against, and one rejected ballot. The process stirred political tension in the district, particularly around the Gandawi zone, a populous area with strategic influence.

About Sissala West Municipal District

Sissala West District, located in the Upper West Region of Ghana, has Gwollu as its administrative capital. Covering a land area of approximately 5,092 square kilometers, the district is largely rural and agriculturally driven, with a population of 63,828 recorded in the 2021 census.

It shares boundaries with Lambussie-Karni to the west, Nadowli Kaleo to the south, Wa East to the southeast, and Sissala East to the east. The district is known for its rich biodiversity, with part of the Gbele Resource Reserve located within its borders, offering ecological and tourism potential.

Sissala West District has undertaken a range of impactful development projects across education, health, agriculture, and infrastructure. In the education sector, the Assembly has completed and initiated several classroom blocks, including 3-unit facilities at Gbele, Niator, Bullu-Jagamua, Dakuma, Chetu, and Kaa. These projects aim to reduce overcrowding and improve access to basic education. The district has also supplied over 1,800 pieces of school furniture and supported teacher trainees, mock exams, and cultural programs to enhance learning outcomes.

In healthcare, the district has constructed CHPS compounds at Kandia, Liplime, Gumo, and Silbelle, alongside health centers at Zini and Jeffisi. These facilities are complemented by borehole drilling, walkway construction at Gwollu Hospital, and procurement of medical equipment and motorbikes for health outreach. Public sensitization campaigns on HIV/AIDS, malaria, and non-communicable diseases have also been rolled out to improve community health awareness.

Agricultural support has focused on dry-season farming and livestock production. The district has rehabilitated dams and dugouts, distributed cashew seedlings under the PERD initiative, and promoted mechanized farming. These efforts aim to reduce seasonal unemployment and boost food security.

Infrastructure development includes feeder road rehabilitation, market stall construction, and sanitation upgrades. The Assembly has also supported youth development through sports and cultural events, and implemented social protection programs such as LEAP and support for persons with disabilities.
