Sissala East Municipal District
Sissala East Municipal is located in the northeastern part of Ghana’s Upper West Region, with Tumu as its administrative capital. It spans approximately 4,744 square kilometers, making it the largest municipality in the region by land area. The municipality shares a 300-kilometer border with Burkina Faso to the north and is bounded by Kassena-Nankana and Builsa districts to the east, West Mamprusi to the southeast, Wa East and Nadowli to the southwest, and Sissala West to the west.
With a population of 80,619 recorded in the 2021 census, the area is predominantly rural and agriculturally driven. Major crops include maize, groundnuts, millet, and cotton, while shea and dawadawa trees support agro-processing. The terrain is gently undulating, with the Sissili River and its tributaries providing seasonal water sources. Cultural landmarks such as the mysterious rocks at Pieng, the Kasena slave market, and the White Man’s Grave at Tumu contribute to the municipality’s historical significance.
Several key development projects have been initiated. One major intervention is the implementation of SOCO Phase I projects, which include the construction of 45 kilometers of town roads, a basketball court in Tumu, and a maternity ward at Kong. These projects aim to improve infrastructure and promote social cohesion.
Another significant initiative is the expansion of educational infrastructure, with the construction of a 3-unit classroom block with office and urinal at Navariwie, the procurement of 300 dual desks for schools, and the completion of a CHPS compound at Kulfuo to enhance healthcare delivery. The Assembly has also developed 40 lockable stores at Tumu Market to boost local commerce and provide secure trading spaces. In agriculture, the municipality has distributed 13,750 cashew seedlings under the PERD initiative to diversify income sources and promote agroforestry.
