Jirapa Municipal District

Jirapa Municipal, located in the northwestern part of Ghana’s Upper West Region, was elevated to municipal status in 2018 through Legislative Instrument 1902. It shares boundaries with Lambussie-Karni to the north, Lawra Municipal to the west, Nadowli District to the south, Daffiama-Bussie-Issa to the southeast, and Sissala West to the northeast. The administrative capital, Jirapa, serves as a cultural and administrative hub for the municipality.

The municipality has a population of 91,279, according to the 2021 census, with 43,021 males and 48,258 females. Covering approximately 1,166 square kilometers, the area is largely agrarian, with farming as the dominant economic activity.

Hon. Nangpello Ninfaapigzie Peter was confirmed as the Municipal Chief Executive in April 2025, following a second round of voting by assembly members. His initial vote fell short of the required two-thirds majority, but he secured 42 votes in the decisive round, representing 80.77% of ballots cast. His confirmation was met with optimism and a renewed call for unity among stakeholders. In his acceptance speech, Hon. Peter pledged to serve with honesty and dedication, emphasizing collaborative governance and inclusive development.

Under his leadership, the municipality is expected to continue its focus on infrastructure, education, health, and climate resilience. Ongoing projects include the construction of a Forward Operational Base in Bookpiriyiri and Doggo, climate change dam initiatives, and a 3.5-kilometer road project along the Mwankuuri–Chachaa corridor. The Assembly also remains committed to national programs such as Planting for Food and Jobs, One Village One Dam, LEAP, NABCO, and the School Feeding Programme. NGOs including ActionAid Ghana, World Vision, and GIZ continue to support interventions in agriculture, health, and women’s empowerment.
