Shai-Osudoku District: Development Projects, Culture and Tourism in Greater Accra

Shai-Osudoku District, one of the 29 administrative districts in Ghana’s Greater Accra Region, is nestled in the southeastern part of the country. As of the 2024 census, the district hosts a population of approximately 113,812. It was officially established in June 2012 via Legislative Instrument 2137 after being carved out of the former Dangme West District. Stretching over 721 square kilometers, Shai- Osudoku is the largest district by land size in the Greater Accra Region and remains one of its few purely rural areas, largely untouched by Accra’s fast-moving urban sprawl. Bordered by North Tongu District to the northeast, Yilo and Manya Krobo to the northwest, North Akwapim to the west, Kpone Katamanso to the southwest, Ningo/Prampram to the south, and Ada West District to the east, the district features a flat terrain punctuated by ancient hills like the Shai Hills—a popular cultural and ecological landmark. The verdant Dodowa Forest, rich with history and biodiversity, also lies within its landscape, enhancing the area’s ecotourism potential. Culturally vibrant, the district is home to a diverse mix of ethnic groups, including Ga- Adangme, Akan, and Ewe. Residents predominantly practice Christianity, with minorities of Muslims and Traditional Believers. The local economy is anchored in agriculture, alongside vibrant trading, tailoring, and a growing number of white-collar professions. Commonly spoken languages include Dangme, Ga, Twi, Ewe, and English. Shai-Osudoku’s commitment to development is evident in recent transformative projects aimed at uplifting the lives of its people: A 1000-metric-tonne grain warehouse has been commissioned in Manya Jorpanya to support local farmers and reduce post-harvest losses.

A fully functional community centre in Ayikuma inaugurated in 2024, now serves as a hub for civic engagement and social activities. -Through FairTrade funding, Golden Exotics Limited spearheaded the construction of a six-unit classroom block, a three-unit kindergarten block, and a 10-unit residence for teachers and nurses in Volivo—enhancing both education and healthcare access. In October 2024, the distribution of 400 desks to basic schools across the district marked a significant step toward improving learning environments for students. With its rich heritage, enduring rural identity, and a growing list of impactful projects, Shai-Osudoku District is charting a path of balanced and sustainable development. Ignatius Godfred Korku Dordoye is the DCE for Shai Osudoku.
