Sene West Municipal District
Sene West District, located in the northeastern corner of Ghana’s Bono East Region, is a predominantly rural district with a strong agricultural base and growing development ambitions. Its capital, Kwame Danso, serves as the administrative and commercial center. The district was officially established in 2012 through Legislative Instrument 2088, following the division of the former Sene District into Sene East and Sene West. Covering approximately 2,885 square kilometers, it accounts for about 10.9 percent of the region’s land area and comprises over 137 communities.
The population stands at 69,836 according to the 2021 census, with a fairly balanced gender distribution. The district is ethnically diverse, home to the Dwans, Wiase, Akans, Ewes, and several northern tribes. Commonly spoken languages include Dwan, Wiase, Twi, Dagbani, Konkomba, Hausa, and Dagaare. The traditional structure includes two paramountcies—Dwan and Wiase—each led by an Omanhene, supported by divisional chiefs and Odikros.
Agriculture is the backbone of the local economy, employing about 70 percent of the active labor force. Major crops include yam, rice, maize, and cassava, while livestock and fisheries also contribute significantly. The district has a vibrant yam market in Kwame Danso and several other market centers, though poor road conditions hinder trade and mobility.
Water access remains a challenge, with many communities relying on boreholes and wells, some of which dry up seasonally.
Recent development efforts have focused on strategic infrastructure and social services. In 2022, the Assembly supplied 500 dual desks to basic schools, constructed two three-unit classroom blocks at Bantama Model Girls School, and built 20-unit market sheds at Kyeamekrom. Sixteen small and medium enterprises received training in financial literacy and packaging. In October 2024, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission handed over mechanized borehole systems to four communities—Kyeamekrom, Kofi Gyan, Lemu, and Shafa—benefiting over 14,000 residents.
