Abount Sene East Municipal District

Sene East District, located in the northeastern part of Ghana’s Bono East Region, is a vast and agriculturally rich area with Kajaji as its capital. Established in 2012 through Legislative Instrument 2091, the district was carved out of the former Sene District and spans approximately 4,392 square kilometers.

It shares boundaries with East Gonja Municipal to the north, Krachi West District to the east, Sene West to the west, and Kwahu Afram Plains North to the south. The district comprises over 228 settlements, including 38 island communities formed by the Volta Lake, and has a population of 72,081 according to the 2021 census.

The economy is predominantly agrarian, with about 70 percent of the labor force engaged in farming and fishing. Major crops include yam, rice, maize, cassava, groundnut, cowpea, and sorghum, while livestock and aquaculture also contribute to livelihoods. Kajaji hosts a central market that serves as a key trading hub for agricultural produce. Despite its fertile land and water resources, the district faces challenges in road connectivity, water access, and post-harvest losses.

Recent development efforts have focused on infrastructure and social services. In 2022, the Assembly supplied 500 dual desks to basic schools and constructed two three-unit classroom blocks at Bantama Model Girls School. A 20-unit market shed was built at Kyeamekrom, and sixteen small and medium enterprises received training in financial literacy and packaging.

In October 2024, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission handed over mechanized borehole systems to four communities—Kyeamekrom, Kofi Gyan, Lemu, and Shafa—benefiting over 14,000 residents. In May 2025, the district hosted the launch of Ghana’s Scaling-Up Renewable Energy Programme (SREP), which aims to provide clean electricity to underserved communities through mini grids and solar home systems.
