About Sekyere Kumawu District

Charting Growth and Unity: Development Progress and Leadership in Sekyere Kumawu District

Sekyere Kumawu District, nestled in the eastern corridor of Ghana’s Ashanti Region, was established in 2012 by Legislative Instrument 2171. With Kumawu as its capital, the district covers approximately 1,500.6 square kilometers, making up about 6.2% of the region’s total land area. It shares borders with Sekyere Central to the west, Sekyere East to the north, Asante Akim North to the southwest, and Sekyere Afram Plains to the south. As of the 2021 population census, the district recorded 64,396 residents, with a nearly equal distribution of males and females. Known for its predominantly agrarian economy, more than 60% of the employed population is engaged in agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, shaping both the cultural and economic rhythm of the area.

Recent development efforts in the district have reflected a firm commitment to improving infrastructure, public services, and livelihoods. Rehabilitation works on classroom blocks in communities such as Dadease, Bahankra, and Sekyere have significantly enhanced educational accessibility and teaching conditions.

The construction of new market stalls and secure stores in towns like Oyoko and Kumawu has invigorated local trade and supported small business growth. Water and sanitation initiatives, including the provision of mechanized boreholes and modern toilet facilities in Bodomase and Oyoko Aburaso, have improved public health outcomes and reduced environmental hazards.

Improvements in road infrastructure, particularly the asphalt overlays in Kumawu, Woraso, and Dadease, have bolstered internal connectivity, eased transportation challenges, and promoted commercial activity. The district’s energy landscape is also encouraging, with nearly 90% of its communities enjoying access to the national electricity grid. On the agricultural front, the government’s Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD) program has made strides through the distribution of thousands of seedlings—coconut, oil palm, teak, and mahogany—boosting both food production and reforestation. Notably, the NSS Kumawu Farm Project, spanning over 4,000 acres, is transforming the district into a regional economic hub while creating job and training opportunities for youth and smallholder farmers.

The Municiaplity is under the leadership of Hon. Kwasi Amankwaa, the newly sworn-in District Chief Executive. Confirmed in May 2025, his appointment was met with strong endorsement from Assembly members and community stakeholders, reflecting his reputation for integrity, grassroots engagement, and developmental focus. Since assuming office, Hon. Amankwaa has prioritized collaborative governance, engaging traditional authorities, Assembly members, and civil society groups to refine and align development objectives. His vision places emphasis on inclusive progress, transparency, and unity, with targeted efforts in education, infrastructure, health care, sanitation, and employment creation. Hon. Amankwaa’s leadership philosophy resonates with the district’s aspiration to grow beyond its agrarian roots while preserving community bonds and promoting local innovation.

As Sekyere Kumawu District builds momentum in its development trajectory, the synergy between strategic planning and responsive leadership continues to shape a future grounded in opportunity, equity, and shared prosperity.
