Sefwi Wiawso Municipality District
Sefwi Wiawso Municipality, located in the Western North Region of Ghana, holds a pivotal role as both the municipal and regional capital. Elevated to municipal status in March 2012 under Legislative Instrument (L.I) 2015, it covers approximately 994 square kilometers and shares boundaries with Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai to the east, Bodi District to the west, Asunafo South to the north, and Aowin Municipal to the south. The population as of the 2021 census stands at 151,220, nearly evenly split between males and females.
The municipality thrives on agriculture, with cocoa, cashew, and timber forming the backbone of the local economy, and nearly 80 percent of residents engaged in farming. Culturally, it is renowned for the Alluolue Festival and heritage sites such as the Tree of God, the Abombirim Sacred Tortoise Forest, and the Ancestral Hole of Bosomoiso.
Hon. Dominic Gyasi, born on June 7, 1987, hails from Sefwi Ahwiaa. An educator by profession, he taught at Asawinso Senior High School before entering active politics. He holds a Bachelor of Education in English Language and has served in various leadership roles within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including TEIN Vice President, Youth Organizer, Constituency Communication Officer, and Constituency Secretary. His confirmation as MCE on April 9, 2025 marked a new phase of energetic and inclusive leadership, rooted in youth empowerment, education, infrastructure expansion, and accountable governance.
One of the flagship initiatives is the phased redevelopment of the Dwinase Market, with phases one and two completed and phase three currently ongoing. The project comprises eleven market sheds, fifty-six lockable stores, a police station, and a fourteen-seater water closet KVIP facility— all aimed at improving trade and safety for local merchants.
Another significant intervention is the improvement of the Nsuonsuo to Ayilekrom road. The initial stretch has been tarred, providing much-needed relief to commuters and traders, and residents have called for the swift continuation of the remaining phases to boost transportation and commerce.
Education infrastructure has also received attention with the construction of a dedicated girls’ dormitory—named the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Girls’ Dormitory—at the Sefwi Wiawso Senior High School. A new entrance has been added to enhance accessibility, promoting safety and discipline among students, particularly young women.
Complementing these physical projects is a robust push for spatial planning. The assembly has prioritized orderly land use and development control, working closely with the Environmental Health Department to address sanitation issues, prevent unauthorized construction, and ensure a clean and safe environment for residents.
