Location & Background
Sagnarigu Municipal was carved out of Tamale Metropolitan Assembly in 2012 and elevated to municipal status in 2018. It spans approximately 454 km², bordered by Savelugu, Tamale Metropolis, Tolon, and Kumbungu districts.
Key Development Projects
● A modern facility with 84 stores, 74 stalls, a banking hall, police post, clinic, butcher shop, fire hydrant, and crèche.
● Girls Model School at Sagnarigu-Kukuo: A purpose-built school for teenage mothers and girls, funded by ActionAid and the People’s Postcode Lottery UK.
● Storm Drain Construction & Road Rehabilitation: Major works in Ward K and the Fuo–Gbalahi corridor.
● Institutional Latrines with Mechanized Boreholes: Promoting WASH in seven communities.
Education & Health
The municipality hosts 345 schools, including basic, SHS, and tertiary institutions. Health services are distributed across six sub-districts, though the area still lacks a district hospital and staff housing.
Sanitation & Environment
Sagnarigu has made strides in sanitation, with six communities declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) and several others nearing full coverage. The Assembly won the Baobab District WASH Award in 2024 for its sanitation efforts.
