Hon. Dzowu Kofi William, (MEC) - Obuasi East Municipal District

Profile of MCE

Leadership within the municipality took a renewed turn on March 15, 2025, when Hon. Dzowu Kofi William was unanimously confirmed as the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). Hon. Dzowu, who had served as the NDC Secretary in the district since 2012, received a full 28 out of 28 votes in an election supervised by the Electoral Commission—a rare show of unity and confidence.

In his acceptance speech, he expressed sincere appreciation to the President of the Republic, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, as well as the traditional authorities and Assembly Members. Calling his confirmation “a victory for unity,” Hon. Dzowu pledged to lead with inclusion and purpose, guided by his years of community-rooted public service.

About Obuasi East Municipal District

Advancing Development in Obuasi East

Obuasi East Municipal, located in the southern part of Ghana’s Ashanti Region, is one of the forty-three administrative districts in the region. Originally carved out of the larger Obuasi Municipal District, it gained independence on 15 March 2018 under Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2332.

The move was part of Ghana’s broader decentralization strategy aimed at deepening local governance. On 22 October 2024, the district achieved a new milestone by attaining municipal status, marking a step forward in administrative capacity and development planning. Its capital, Tutuka, lies in proximity to the mining hub of Obuasi and shares boundaries with Adansi North, Akrofuom, Adansi Asokwa, and Obuasi Municipal.

Key Projects

The municipality continues to witness transformative growth through strategic projects that span agriculture, education, entrepreneurship, and infrastructure. A newly commissioned cassava processing factory at Mampamhwe, funded by the District Assemblies Common Fund – Responsiveness Factor Grant (DACF-RFG), empowers farmers by reducing post-harvest losses and creating market linkages. The district also celebrated the launch of its first public library and ICT center in Lowcost, promoting literacy and digital inclusion for residents of all ages.

Education infrastructure has seen remarkable upgrades, including the construction of a three-unit KG block at Brahabebome, equipped with essential amenities, and a four-unit classroom block at St. Joseph R/C School in Wawase, which replaces older structures damaged by storms. In support of economic growth, the Business Acceleration and Sustainability Project, backed by AngloGold Ashanti, Absa Bank, and MasterCard Foundation, empowers local entrepreneurs through training, financial literacy, and access to markets. Flagship initiatives like Women in E-commerce and Artisans to Entrepreneurs are paving pathways for inclusive development under the municipality’s 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan.
