North Gonja District: A Blend of Agriculture, Heritage, and Strategic Governance
North Gonja District, located in the Savannah Region of Ghana, is a geographically strategic and agriculturally vibrant area with Daboya as its administrative capital. Established in 2012 through Legislative Instrument 2065, it spans approximately 4,845.5 square kilometers, representing about 6.9% of the region’s landmass.
Bounded by West Gonja and Wa East to the west, Tolon to the east, Mamprugu Moagduri and Kumbungu to the north, and Central Gonja to the south, the district is home to 61,432 residents as of the 2021 census. The economy thrives on agriculture, with maize, millet, sorghum, yam, and groundnuts cultivated widely. Livestock rearing and fishing along the White Volta supplement income, while Daboya’s weaving industry and shea processing offer essential livelihoods, especially for women.
Infrastructure development remains a priority, with efforts to improve roads like the Daboya–Lingbinsi–Mankarigu stretch. Health and education services have expanded under the School Feeding Programme, LEAP, and Free SHS. Water supply and sanitation have been enhanced through mechanized boreholes and WASH interventions, while rural electrification projects are ongoing.
