North East Gonja Municipal District
Profile of North East Gonja District: A Young Assembly Driving Inclusive Development in Savannah Region
North East Gonja District, located in the eastern corridor of Ghana’s Savannah Region, was officially inaugurated on 12th February 2019 following its creation by Legislative Instrument 2367. Carved out of the former East Gonja District, it spans approximately 4,601 square kilometers and has Kpalbe as its administrative capital. As of the 2021 census, the district’s population stands at 39,404, with a nearly equal gender distribution.
The district shares boundaries with Mion and Tamale Metropolitan to the north, Central Gonja to the west, Nanumba North to the east, and East Gonja Municipality to the south. Agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy, with residents engaged in crop cultivation—maize, rice, yam, cassava, and groundnuts—and animal rearing. However, farming is largely rain-fed, and the district faces challenges with irrigation and agricultural infrastructure.
Infrastructure development is steadily progressing. Key projects include the construction of nurses’ quarters and rural clinics in Lantikpa and Takpli, classroom blocks and sanitation facilities in Kpalbe, and feeder road improvements such as the Kpalbe–Jinlo and Dagbogshie–Buhija stretches. The district is also benefiting from the Agenda 111 initiative, with a new hospital nearing completion.
Education and health services are expanding, though gaps remain. There are 91 schools and 155 health staff serving the district, but facilities are limited, and access to quality services is uneven. Mechanized boreholes and WASH programs have improved water access, though the low water table poses challenges.
