Nkoranza South Municipal: A Growing Agrarian Hub in Bono East

Nkoranza South Municipal, located in the southern part of Ghana’s Bono East Region, is a vibrant district with deep agricultural roots and a steadily expanding urban profile. Its capital, Nkoranza, serves as the administrative and commercial center. The municipality was carved out of the former Nkoranza District in 2007 and elevated to municipal status in 2012 through Legislative Instrument 2095. It spans approximately 923 square kilometers and shares boundaries with Nkoranza North, Techiman Municipal, Ejura-Sekyedumase, and Offinso North.

The population stands at 114,642 as of the 2021 census, with a youthful demographic and a nearly equal gender distribution. The district comprises over 100 settlements, including Donkro Nkwanta, Akumsa-Dumase, Bonsu, Dotobaa, Brahoho, and Nkwabeng. Agriculture dominates the local economy, employing over 75% of the labor force. Major crops include maize, yam, cassava, groundnut, cowpea, watermelon, and cashew. The district is one of Ghana’s leading maize producers and has growing potential in mango and tobacco cultivation. Livestock farming is also widespread, with cattle, pigs, goats, and poultry reared across communities.

Recent development efforts have focused on four strategic projects. The commissioning of the Nkoranza New Market in November 2024 marked a major milestone, featuring 50 lockable stores, 100 open stalls, a police post, health post, and a crèche. Under the Facilitated Collective Action Process (FCAP), ten communities have launched grassroots development projects, including school blocks, CHPS compounds, and water systems. The Assembly has also implemented sanitation campaigns and expanded public toilet facilities. Additionally, the municipality is executing its 2024–2027 Medium-Term Development Plan, which outlines goals for infrastructure, education, health, and revenue mobilization.
