Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly: Evolution and Key Development Projects
The Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly, located in the western part of the Greater Accra Region, has undergone several administrative transformations to better serve its growing population. Originally part of the larger Ga West District in 2004, the area saw multiple subdivisions over the years. On 29 February 2008, the western portion became the Ga South Municipal Assembly, with Weija as its capital. Later, portions were further carved out to establish Ga Central Municipal Assembly in 2012 and a new Ga South Municipal District in 2018 with Ngleshie Amanfro as its capital.
The remaining part was officially renamed the Weija-Gbawe Municipal District, with Weija maintaining its role as the capital.
Today, Weija-Gbawe is a rapidly urbanizing municipality witnessing critical infrastructure and social investments. Four major development projects stand out:
Plastic Recycling and Lumber Plant Funded by the European Union with an investment of €2.5 million, this state-of-the-art facility processes 2,000 tons of plastic waste annually. It not only combats pollution but also generates sustainable jobs for youth and women by converting plastic into materials for furniture and construction.
Science-Based Senior High School: Currently about 70% complete, this new SHS will enhance access to quality science education in the municipality, equipping students with skills for the modern economy.
Municipal Hospital Expansion Significant upgrades are underway at the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Hospital, including the addition of an infectious diseases and diagnostic center. The expansion also features new residential quarters for hospital staff and dormitories to support the Weija Leprosarium.
EU/WGMA Abattoir Project Nearing completion, this integrated facility includes a breeding center, feed mill, and abattoir to improve local meat production and hygiene standards—supporting both health and livelihoods in the community.
Felix Odartey Lartey is the MCE for the Municipality.
