About Ashaimman Municipal District
Driving Urban Transformation: Ashaiman’s Developmental Strides
Ashaiman Municipality, established in 2008 after its separation from the former Tema Municipality, is one of the 29 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region. Located just 4 kilometers north of Tema and approximately 30 kilometers from Accra, it covers a compact land area of 17 square kilometers. Despite its modest size, Ashaiman is home to a vibrant population exceeding 208,000 residents.
The municipality is wholly urban, hosting a rich blend of ethnic groups including Ewe, Akan, Ga-Dangme, and Mole-Dagbani. A youthful population and dynamic informal sector underpin its economic landscape, which is marked by bustling trade, skilled artisan activities, and an expanding service industry. While Ashaiman faces challenges related to infrastructure, sanitation, and housing, it remains a resilient hub of civic innovation, with the Municipal Assembly championing transformative projects that respond to the needs of its people.
Among the most impactful initiatives is the Comprehensive Road Rehabilitation Project, targeting the upgrade of over 160 kilometers of major and inner-city roads. The ongoing efforts aim to ease traffic congestion, enhance accessibility, and improve the flow of goods and services. The project includes the construction of drainage systems and the resurfacing of roads, with the first 10 kilometers currently under active development ahead of the full-scale bitumen overlay scheduled after the rainy season.
In line with sustainable development goals, the municipality has also embraced an innovative approach to sanitation and green energy through the SafiSana Project. This initiative transforms organic and faecal waste into bio-fertilizer and renewable energy, directly improving hygiene conditions for more than 125,000 residents. In addition to its environmental benefits, the project contributes to local employment and agricultural productivity, representing a scalable model for other urban centers.
Another cornerstone effort is the overhaul of Ashaiman’s aging sewage infrastructure. The new sewerage system—currently replacing the outdated TDC Quarters network—will serve over 4,700 households. With financial support from the World Bank under the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) Sanitation and Water Project, this upgrade is expected to significantly reduce environmental pollution and improve overall public health in the municipality.
Education and employment are also central to Ashaiman’s developmental priorities. The conversion of a previously underutilized E-Block facility into the Ashaiman Technical Vocational Institute marks a strategic investment in youth empowerment and skills development. Paired with the creation of an Artisan Village, the project fosters hands-on training in trades critical to the local economy. These educational reforms are complemented by broader civic beautification and sanitation improvements, including tree planting and school hygiene programs.
