About New Juaben South Municipal District
New Juaben South Municipal Development Highlights and Leadership Update
The New Juaben South Municipal Assembly, with Koforidua as its capital, continues to advance its development agenda through strategic infrastructure and social interventions.
Under the Ghana Secondary City Support Programme and the Urban Development Grant (UDG), the municipality has executed several transformative projects aimed at boosting economic activity, improving urban resilience, and enhancing public service delivery.
One of the most ambitious undertakings is the redevelopment of the Zabramma Bodey and Yam Market, awarded at a cost of GHS21.39 million. This comprehensive reconstruction includes 126 lockable stores, open stalls, a health post, a drainage system, a mosque, a kindergarten for traders’ children, and extensive pavement works. The project is designed to modernize trading infrastructure and create a more inclusive and hygienic market environment.
Complementing this is the redevelopment of the Zongo Market, valued at GHS15.01 million. The initiative involves constructing new stores, renovating existing stalls, and adding facilities such as a lorry station, police post, and security infrastructure. Traders have been temporarily relocated to Krobo Junction to ensure continuity of business during construction.
Another standout project is the Nsukwao Drainage System, which addresses perennial flooding in low-lying areas of Koforidua. This intervention enhances urban resilience and protects lives and property, especially during the rainy season.
The municipality has also embarked on the upgrading of Jackson Park, a central recreational space in Koforidua. Phases I and II of the project aim to transform the park into a vibrant public space with improved landscaping, seating areas, and event facilities, promoting community engagement and tourism.
These projects reflect the Assembly’s commitment to inclusive urban development, economic revitalization, and environmental sustainability.A significant milestone in the municipality’s leadership came with the confirmation of Ransford Owusu Boakye as the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). In a unanimous show of confidence, he secured all 49 votes from assembly members, representing a full 100% endorsement.
Prior to his confirmation, Owusu Boakye served as the Eastern Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), where he earned recognition for his leadership in disaster preparedness and emergency response.
