Nanton District: A Model of Inclusive Governance and Rural Transformation
Nanton Municipal District
Nanton District, located in the northwest of Ghana’s Northern Region, was officially inaugurated on 15th March 2018 under Legislative Instrument (L.I) 2347, following its separation from the former Savelugu-Nanton District. With a land area of 693.1 square kilometers, the district is home to 50,767 residents (2021 Census), nearly evenly split between males and females. The capital town, Nanton, serves as the administrative and commercial hub.
The district’s economy is predominantly agrarian, with over 68% of the labor force engaged in subsistence farming. Major crops include maize, rice, soya beans, guinea corn, yams, tomatoes, pepper, and okro, while livestock such as goats, sheep, cattle, and poultry are widely reared. Key market centers like Nanton, Zieng, Tampion, and Zoggu facilitate trade and revenue generation.
In recent years, Nanton District has made significant strides in infrastructure, education, health, and water access. Among its standout development projects are:
● Rehabilitation of the Nanton Kurugu Dam: A transformative safety net initiative aimed at boosting irrigation, food security, and employment.
● Solar-Powered Water Systems: Two systems inaugurated in 2024 now serve over 20,000 residents across nine communities, including Nanton-Kurugu, thanks to USAID and Global Communities.
● Community-Led Climate Adaptation Plans (CAAPs): Integrated into the district’s Medium Term Development Plan (2025–2029), these plans empower communities to address environmental challenges through sustainable agriculture and water management.
● Education Expansion: Establishment of Nanton Senior High School, now fully operational, alongside over 30 new schools built between 2019 and 2023.
Her leadership has been widely celebrated, with strong backing from the Member of Parliament, Hon. Mohammed Sherif Abdul-Khaliq, and traditional authorities. Under her administration, the district continues to prioritize education, health, water access, and climate resilience, aligning with its 2025–2028 Composite Budget and national development goals.
Nanton District’s journey reflects a broader narrative of rural empowerment, gender-inclusive governance, and strategic investment. With visionary leadership and community-driven planning, the district is steadily transforming into a model of sustainable development in Ghana’s Northern Region.
