Nandom Municipal District
Nandom Municipal is located in the northwestern corner of Ghana’s Upper West Region, sharing borders with Burkina Faso to the north and west, and Lambussie and Jirapa districts to the east and south. It covers approximately 387 square kilometers and comprises 84 communities, with 95% of the population living in rural areas.
The 2021 census recorded a population of 51,328, nearly evenly split between males and females. The municipality is home to the Dagara people, whose dialects form a continuum with neighboring districts and parts of Burkina Faso. Agriculture is the backbone of the local economy, engaging over 85% of residents, with maize, millet, groundnuts, and soybeans as major crops. Nandom also hosts cultural landmarks like the St. Theresa’s Minor Basilica, once the largest stone-built church in West Africa.
