Nabdam Municipal District:
Development Highlights and Leadership
Nabdam District, located in the Upper East Region of Ghana, was officially established on 28th June 2012 by Legislative Instrument (L.I. 2105), following its separation from the former Talensi-Nabdam District. Its administrative capital is Nangodi. The district spans approximately 251 km² and shares boundaries with Bongo District to the north, Talensi to the south, Bawku West to the east, and Bolgatanga East to the west
With a population of over 53,000 as of the 2021 census, Nabdam is predominantly rural and agrarian. The local economy is driven by subsistence farming, small-scale mining, and seasonal vegetable cultivation. The district faces environmental challenges such as land degradation, erratic rainfall, and bushfires, but also boasts rich cultural heritage, mineral deposits (notably gold), and growing infrastructure
Four Key Development Projects
1. SOCO Infrastructure Expansion
○ Under the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) project, Nabdam is benefiting from over 20 development initiatives, including:
■ CHPS compounds in Logre and other communities
■ Maternity blocks at Pelungu and Zanlerigu
■ Market sheds, youth centers, and boreholes
2. Sanitation Infrastructure Enhancement
○ Through the $1 million per constituency initiative, the Assembly constructed six 10-seater water closet toilet facilities at strategic locations like Gane-Asonge, Kongo, and Sakoti. These are aimed at curbing open defecation and improving hygiene along transit routes.
3. Mining Dialogue and Environmental Accountability
○ In partnership with TAMA Foundation, the district hosted a stakeholder dialogue series to address mining-related concerns. This initiative promotes transparency, conflict resolution, and sustainable resource management.
4. Youth Empowerment and Sports Development
○ The Assembly organized inter-cluster sports games to foster social cohesion and volunteerism. A standard sports stadium is also planned for Kongo under the SOCO framework.
