About Lower Manya Krobo Municipal District
Transforming Lower Manya Krobo: Development Milestones and Leadership Under Hon. John Atterh Martey
Lower Manya Krobo Municipal District, located in the eastern part of Ghana’s Eastern Region with Odumase Krobo as its capital, is undergoing a dynamic transformation across infrastructure, education, health, sanitation, and local governance.
Originally part of the larger Manya Krobo District created in 1988 from the former Kaoga District Council, the area was restructured in 2008 when its northwest portion was split off to form Upper Manya Krobo District. On 6 February 2012, it attained municipal status and was renamed Lower Manya Krobo Municipal District.
Strategic Projects Driving Municipal Growth
The municipality has seen major investments in education, including a 12-unit classroom block for Manya Krobo Senior High School, completed blocks for Odumase Anglican Primary, Oborpah East, Djekiti, and a kindergarten facility for Kpong Methodist. Health infrastructure has expanded with CHPS compounds in Piengua Yokwenor, Oborpah Djekiti, and Wawase, alongside hostel and academic blocks at the Odumase Nursing and Midwifery College.
Economic empowerment is being fueled by the construction of 188 lockable stores at Agormanya Market, the refurbishment of five key markets—Atua, Akuse, Laasi, Kpong Bus Station, and Agormanya—and the completion of Laasi Mini-Market. These initiatives are creating jobs and boosting local commerce.
Roads such as Canaan and Kpanyas have been surfaced with bitumen, while the ongoing Atua-Adjikpo-Yokunya road construction is improving inter-community access. Drainage improvements on SAS George Street and Manaam corridor now offer flood control and safer urban mobility.
Electrification efforts have connected nine communities—including Aplah, Abobeng, and Wawase—to the national grid under the Self-Help Electrification Project. Water and sanitation upgrades include mechanized boreholes in Yonguase, Akosmbo-Ketem, and Oborpah East, and multiple 10-seater toilet facilities in Nuaso, Akuse, and Akro.
Security infrastructure has also been enhanced with the completion of a new Police Command Office in Odumase Krobo, reinforcing law enforcement and community safety.
Impact and Outlook
These projects are improving access to education and healthcare, reducing travel barriers, enhancing sanitation, and stimulating economic growth. They reflect a coordinated effort to position Lower Manya Krobo as a thriving urban center with rising potential across sectors.
