Lawra Municipal District: Resilience Amid Loss and Development
Nestled in the northwestern corner of Ghana’s Upper West Region, Lawra Municipality borders Burkina Faso to the north and west, and Lambussie and Jirapa to the east and south. Established as a municipality in 2018 under Legislative Instrument 2279, Lawra spans approximately 1,051.2 square kilometers and serves as a strategic gateway for cross-border trade and cultural exchange.
With a population of 58,433 (2021 census), Lawra’s economy is largely agrarian, driven by subsistence farming, livestock rearing, and petty trading. Natural assets such as the Black Volta River, Brutu Forest Reserve, and Methow Buo Crocodile Pond offer untapped tourism potential, though environmental challenges—bushfires, flooding, and land degradation—continue to impact livelihoods.
Leadership Update: In Memory of Alhaji Adams Muazu
Lawra Municipality was struck by tragedy on June 24, 2025, with the passing of its newly appointed Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Adams Muazu, after a short illness. Confirmed in April 2025, he had not fully assumed office due to health complications. His death followed closely after the drowning of seven Lawra SHS students in the Black Volta River at Dikpe—a loss that deeply affected the community.
Alhaji Muazu was a respected educationist and former Upper West Regional Coordinator for Physical Education. He also founded Superteck Digital Studios and played a pivotal role in local NDC politics. His final public act—joining the Regional Security Council to console grieving families—was a testament to his compassion and leadership.
He was 53 years old, survived by three wives and seven children, and was laid to rest in accordance with Islamic customs. As of now, no successor has been officially announced, and the municipality is expected to enter a transitional phase to ensure continuity in governance.
