About La Nkwantanang-Madina District
La Nkwantanang-Madina: Advancing Urban Development Through Education, Housing, and Infrastructure
The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA), established by Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2131 and inaugurated in June 2012, was carved out of the Ga East Municipality to deepen Pdecentralisation and bring governance closer to the people. Its administrative capital, Madina, is a bustling urban hub that blends commercial vibrancy with residential expansion, making it one of the most dynamic areas in the Greater Accra Region.
The Assembly operates through two substructures — the Oyarifa and Madina Zonal Councils — and oversees nine Electoral Areas with thirteen Assembly Members, including four Government Appointees.
Strategically located in the northern part of the Greater Accra Region, LaNMMA shares boundaries with the Ga East Municipal to the west, Adentan Municipal to the east, Accra Metropolitan to the south, and Akwapim South District to the north. The municipality covers a land area of 74.4 square kilometres and is situated between latitude 5°81'3" N and 5° 67' 7" N, and longitude 0°24'0" W and 0° 13' 1" W.
Predominantly urban, with over 80% of its population residing in urban communities, La Nkwantanang-Madina is experiencing rapid development. Pockets of rural settlements are gradually transitioning into peri-urban areas, characterised by a unique blend of traditional livelihoods and contemporary urban development. The municipality continues to experience growth in real estate, commerce, and social infrastructure, reinforcing its position as a key developmental node in the region.
The mission of the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly is to proactively improve the quality of life of its people by harnessing available resources in partnership with both public and private stakeholders.
This mission is reflected in a number of strategic projects aimed at addressing housing, health, safety, and urban mobility.
One of the standout initiatives is Manet Palms Estate, a high-end residential development that has redefined the municipality’s housing landscape. Located within a fast-growing enclave, the estate provides modern, well-structured housing units that cater to the needs of middle- to high-income residents. It contributes to local economic development through property rates, employment, and enhanced real estate value.
The Healthy-Mind Internationa School is a notable project in the municipality.
In response to pedestrian traffic, the Assembly has undertaken key infrastructural interventions to enhance safety. The Atomic Junction footbridge, situated at one of the municipality’s busiest intersections, provides a safe passage for thousands of pedestrians who would otherwise be at risk navigating the busy Accra-Aburi highway. The footbridge has reduced accidents, improved traffic flow, and restored order to the junction.
Similarly, the Zongo Junction footbridge addresses long-standing safety concerns in one of the most densely populated and commercially vibrant areas of Madina. The footbridge now serves as a secure overpass for schoolchildren, traders, and residents, significantly reducing pedestrian-vehicle conflicts and supporting seamless urban mobility.
These four exceptional projects — Manet Palms Estate, Healthy-Mind International, School Atomic Junction footbridge, and Zongo Junction footbridge — together exemplify LaNMMA’s integrated approach to municipal development. Through a balance of infrastructure, social service, and residential development, the municipality is steadily transforming into a model urban centre that prioritises the well-being, safety, and dignity of its people.
