About Kwahu Afram Plains South District

Kwahu Afram Plains South: District Profile and Development Highlights

Kwahu Afram Plains South District, located in the northwestern corner of Ghana’s Eastern Region, was established by Legislative Instrument 2045 in June 2012, with Tease serving as its administrative capital. Spanning roughly 3,095 square kilometres, the district is home to over 74,000 residents according to the 2021 Population and Housing Census.

It shares boundaries with Kwahu Afram Plains North, Kwahu South, parts of the Ashanti Region, and the Volta Lake. Characterized by savannah vegetation and red silty loam soils, the district’s economy is predominantly agrarian, supported by inland fishing, crop farming, and livestock production.

The area’s terrain ranges from 60 to 120 metres above sea level, with major water bodies like the Afram and Volta rivers shaping both its ecology and transport infrastructure. Access is largely provided via two main road corridors—Nkawkaw–Mpraeso–Bepong–Kwahu Tafo and Adawso—with a ferry service facilitating crossings of the Afram River. More than 260 communities, including 94 island settlements, contribute to the district’s socio-economic diversity and logistical complexities.

Key Projects

Over the past few years, Kwahu Afram Plains South has benefited from several transformative development projects:

The Agenda 111 District Hospital in Tease, one of the nation’s flagship healthcare initiatives, was approximately 48% complete by early 2024. Once finished, the facility will enhance access to emergency, maternal and specialized health services across the district.

In support of local agribusiness, a Pig and Animal Feed Processing Factory was completed under the One District One Factory (1D1F) programme. Located in Tease, the facility promotes value addition in livestock feed production and supports job creation in the agro-processing sector.

Education infrastructure has improved notably with the construction of a 24-unit classroom block at Maame Krobo Senior High School. Finished in 2017, this four-storey complex features science laboratories, sanitary facilities and administrative offices—boosting capacity and academic performance in the district.

To enhance digital inclusion, Huawei Rural Star telephony sites were installed between 2019 and 2022 in several remote communities including Dedeso, Bonkrom and Kwame Dwamena. These installations have extended mobile connectivity to underserved areas, facilitating access to digital education and emergency services.

Additionally, a post-harvest warehouse at Kwasi Fante was completed at 95% under the One District One Warehouse initiative. Designed to reduce crop losses and stabilize local food supply chains, the facility supports the district’s agricultural productivity goals.

With Tangmee now at the helm of the district’s administration, stakeholders are looking ahead to how this momentum can be sustained and scaled. If you'd like to track subsequent initiatives under his leadership or reshape this for publication, I'm happy to assist.
