Kwahu Afram Plains North District: Advancing Infrastructure and Inclusive Growth
Kwahu Afram Plains North District, formerly known as Kwahu North District, is one of Ghana’s 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies and forms part of the 33 districts in the Eastern Region.
Located in the northernmost part of the region, it spans a vast landmass of 2,570 square kilometers, making it the largest district in the Eastern Region. The administrative capital is Donkorkrom.
Access to the district is shaped by its unique geography. The primary route passes through Nkawkaw, Mpraeso, Bepong, Kwahu Tafo, and Adawso, followed by a ferry crossing over the three-kilometer-wide Afram River to Ekye-Amanfrom, operated by the Volta Lake Transport Company. Another entrance begins at Kpandu-Torkor in the Volta Region, requiring a one-and-a-half-hour ferry journey across the Volta Lake to Agordeke, then by road through Amankwaa and Adeemmra to Donkorkrom. A minor route also connects the district from Atebubu in the Bono East Region into Ntonaboma, which was ceded from Atebubu Amanten Municipal and now falls under the jurisdiction of Kwahu Afram Plains North.
The district shares boundaries with Kwahu South District to the south, the Volta River to the east, Sekyere East and Asante Akim Districts in the Ashanti Region to the west, and Sene East District and Atebubu Amanten Municipal in the Bono East Region to the north. According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, the district has a population of 66,555, comprising 35,567 males and 30,988 females.
Key Projects
Development efforts in the district continue to reflect its commitment to infrastructure, agriculture, and improved living conditions. A three-unit classroom block with an ICT lab and staff common room was constructed at Nana Baadu School in Donkorkrom, enhancing access to education and digital literacy. In support of sustainable agriculture, the Forestry Department distributed over 16,000 cashew seedlings to local farmers, promoting agroforestry and income generation.
At Asikasu, a 1,230-meter U-drain was constructed to improve sanitation and mitigate flooding risks. Additionally, rural electrification projects have extended access to the national grid for communities such as Adukrom, Agordeke, Seibia, and Abotanso, boosting economic activity and improving quality of life.
