Krachi West Municipal District

Krachi West Municipal, located in the northwestern part of Ghana’s Oti Region, spans approximately 4,169 square kilometers, with Kete Krachi as its administrative capital. The municipality borders Krachi East to the east, Krachi Nchumuru to the north, and the Volta Lake to the south and west, which separates it from Sene East in the Bono East Region. About 37 percent of its landmass is covered by water, making lake transport a vital economic asset.

The population stands at 61,128, with a median age of 22. Ethnic diversity is notable, with Nchumuru and Krachi (Guan origin) as the indigenous groups, alongside Ewe, Konkomba, Hausa, and other settler communities. Christianity dominates religious affiliation, followed by traditional beliefs and Islam.

Agriculture is the backbone of the local economy, engaging over 72 percent of the labor force. The municipality is a leading producer of yam, maize, cassava, rice, sorghum, soybeans, and vegetables. Fishing along the Volta Lake and Oti River supports livelihoods, though limited capital and equipment constrain expansion. The district also has five abandoned state farms and vast irrigable land, offering potential for agribusiness development.

Infrastructure development is ongoing, with improved road connectivity between Krachi and Dambai reducing travel time to under 45 minutes. However, feeder roads remain a challenge, especially during the rainy season. Electricity coverage is high in urban areas, but LPG access is limited. Health services include a municipal hospital, 19 CHPS compounds, and reproductive health clinics, though staffing gaps persist. Education infrastructure is expanding, with new classroom blocks and ICT centers under construction.

Four key development projects are shaping the municipality’s transformation. Under the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) initiative, eight projects worth GHC 4 million are underway. These include an ultramodern market, mechanized boreholes, summer huts, a CHPS compound with nurses’ quarters, a mini volleyball pitch, a dam culvert, and a 12-bedroom lodge. The Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme is also redeveloping the Dambai Market to enhance trading infrastructure. Road upgrades are ongoing, including the Wankayaw–Anyabour 1 Road and Emma Plaza–Market stretch. Additionally, the municipality is implementing sanitation campaigns, disaster preparedness programs, and tree planting exercises to improve environmental resilience.
