About Krachi East Municipal District
Krachi East Municipality
The Krachi East Municipality, is the administrative capital of the Oti Region and a strategic gateway between northern and southern Ghana. Established by Legislative Instrument 1755 and elevated to municipal status in 2017, it spans approximately 2,759 square kilometers and borders Krachi West, Krachi Nchumuru, Biakoye, Kadjebi, and Nkwanta South Districts. The municipality is bisected by the Oti River, a tributary of the Volta Lake, and features a mix of savannah and semi-deciduous forest vegetation.
The population stands at over 114,000, with ethnic diversity including Nchumuru, Nawuri, Kaachi, Addele, Akans, Ada, Battor, Kotokoli, Konkomba, Basari, and Fulani communities. Farming and fishing dominate the local economy, supported by fertile soils and abundant water bodies. Crops such as maize, cassava, yam, groundnuts, and rice are widely cultivated, while tilapia, catfish, and Nile perch are harvested from the river. The municipality also hosts the Dambai College of Education and several senior high schools, including Oti Senior High and Yabram Community Day SHS.
Cultural life is vibrant, with traditional dances like Sukudai, Mbofou, and Nchuso performed during funerals and festivals. Kipor Day, observed every six days, prohibits farming activities and reinforces ancestral reverence.
Four key development projects are reshaping the municipality. The Dambai Market Redevelopment, under the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme, is in its third phase and includes the construction of 32 lockable stores to enhance trading infrastructure. A major road rehabilitation initiative, led by the Department of Feeder Roads, is upgrading critical routes such as Wankayaw–Anyabour 1 Road and Emma Plaza–Market stretch to improve mobility and economic access. The Gulf of Guinea SOCO project has funded an ultra-modern surgical theatre at the Dambai Health Centre, with plans to upgrade it into a polyclinic. Additionally, the government is preparing to commence construction of the Dambai Bridge over the Oti River, a transformative infrastructure under the Big Push Programme.
