Kpandai Municipal District: Bridging Development in Ghana’s Eastern Corridor
Kpandai District serves as a strategic gateway between the northern and southern parts of the country. Established on February 29, 2008, through Legislative Instrument 1885, the district was carved out of the East Gonja Municipal and has since evolved into a vibrant administrative and agricultural hub. With a land area of approximately 2,102 square kilometers, Kpandai shares boundaries with Nanumba South to the north, East Gonja to the west, Krachi West to the southwest, and Nkwanta North to the east.
As of the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Kpandai District is home to 126,213 residents, with a nearly equal gender distribution. The district is predominantly rural, with over 90% of the population engaged in agriculture. Crops such as yam, maize, cassava, and groundnuts dominate the landscape, supported by favorable soil conditions and intermittent water bodies. Despite its agricultural potential, the district faces challenges including poor road infrastructure, limited access to healthcare, and inadequate educational facilities.
In recent years, however, Kpandai has witnessed a surge in development initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and infrastructure. Among the standout projects is the rehabilitation of the old post office building into an ambulance service office, enhancing emergency response capabilities. The district also completed the construction of a small house for assembly storage and renovated the local meat shop, reflecting efforts to strengthen public service delivery.
Education has been a focal point, with the supply of 500 dual desks to schools across the district and the construction of multiple classroom blocks in communities such as Kojoboni, Tenglinto, and Kpakpa. Notably, the Lambado Primary School received a six-unit block with teacher quarters, while the Nyong Technical and Vocational Institute saw expansion with dormitory and workshop facilities. These investments aim to reduce the pupil-teacher ratio and improve access to quality education.
Healthcare infrastructure has also improved, with the completion of a CHPS compound at Kabeso and the commissioning of a maternity block at the Karaga District Hospital. The district’s water and sanitation efforts include the rehabilitation of 16 boreholes and the establishment of small-town water systems in Kpandai, Kabonwule, and Loloto.
His administration has already begun restoring administrative capacity and fostering unity among stakeholders. With support from the Northern Regional Minister and collaboration with development partners, Hon. Abdul Karim is poised to accelerate the district’s integration into national development frameworks.
Kpandai District’s journey reflects the resilience and aspirations of its people. Through strategic planning, community engagement, and visionary leadership, the district is steadily overcoming its challenges and laying the foundation for sustainable growth. As it continues to harness its agricultural strengths and improve infrastructure, Kpandai stands as a beacon of progress in Ghana’s Eastern Corridor.
