Kintampo North Municipal: Gateway to Ghana’s Heartland and Agricultural Prosperity

Kintampo North Municipal, located in the northern part of the Bono East Region, is a strategic district known for its central location, rich agricultural potential, and historical significance. With Kintampo as its capital, the municipality spans approximately 5,108 square kilometers and serves as a vital transit point between Ghana’s northern and southern corridors. As of the 2021 census, the population stands at 139,508, with a fairly balanced gender distribution.

The local economy is predominantly agrarian, with over 71% of the population engaged in farming and related activities. Major crops include yam, maize, cassava, groundnuts, rice, cowpea, and vegetables such as tomatoes and garden eggs. The district also produces cashew, mango, and sorghum and has growing potential in livestock and aquaculture. Despite its fertile soils and vast land, irrigation remains underutilized, and post-harvest losses are a persistent challenge.

Kintampo North is also home to notable tourist attractions, including the Kintampo Waterfalls and Fuller Falls, as well as historical sites like the slave market and colonial-era cemeteries. The municipality’s central location and natural beauty position it as a promising hub for agro-tourism and cultural heritage promotion.

Recent development efforts have focused on four key projects. The Assembly has initiated the construction of a modern market complex and rest stops to boost trade and tourism. A district-wide sanitation campaign is underway, including the expansion of public toilet facilities and improved waste management systems. The Assembly is also implementing its 2024–2027 Medium-Term Development Plan, which outlines goals for infrastructure, education, health, and revenue mobilization. Additionally, the municipality is investing in digital inclusion and youth empowerment through ICT training and entrepreneurship programs.
