Development Overview and Leadership Profile

Background of the District
Kassena-Nankana West District, located in the Upper East Region of Ghana, was officially inaugurated on 29th February 2008 following its separation from the larger Kassena-Nankana District. With its administrative capital at Paga, the district spans approximately 1,004 square kilometers and shares borders with Burkina Faso to the north, Bongo District to the northeast, Bolgatanga Municipal to the east, and Sissala East District to the west.

The district is predominantly rural, with over 86% of its population residing in rural communities. Agriculture forms the backbone of the local economy, employing more than 83% of households. Major crops include millet, sorghum, rice, groundnuts, and leafy vegetables, while livestock such as cattle, goats, and guinea fowls are also reared. Despite its rich cultural heritage and natural resources, the district faces challenges such as poor road infrastructure, limited access to potable water, and inadequate educational and health facilities.

2.    Culvert Construction at Navem

○    Part of the district’s infrastructure improvement efforts to enhance road connectivity and reduce flooding in vulnerable areas.
3.    Borehole Drilling in Kanania (NUGS Special Project)

○    A collaborative effort with the National Union of Ghana Students to improve access to clean water in underserved communities.
