About Kassena Nankana Municipal District
Kassena Nankana East Municipal, with Navrongo as its capital, is a dynamic district in Ghana’s Upper East Region. It shares borders with Burkina Faso to the north, Bolgatanga and Bongo Districts to the east, Builsa North and South to the west, and West Mamprusi to the south. Covering approximately 767 square kilometers, the municipality is home to over 134,000 residents and governed by a 49-member assembly.
The terrain features undulating plains and hills like Busono and Zambao, with a tropical climate marked by distinct wet and dry seasons. Rainfall averages 950mm annually, supporting agriculture and domestic water needs through boreholes, dams, and the Tono River irrigation system. Electricity access is expanding, though some rural communities still rely on traditional lighting.
Agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy, engaging over 65% of the population. Farmers cultivate millet, rice, maize, groundnuts, sorghum, okro, tomatoes, and onions, while livestock rearing includes cattle, goats, pigs, and guinea fowls. Women play a vital role in small-scale industries such as smock weaving, pottery, and dressmaking, with ongoing efforts to organize these ventures into cooperatives.
Navrongo’s strong Catholic heritage influences education, with faith-based institutions supporting literacy and schooling. Health services are delivered through 25 facilities, including a hospital, health centers, and CHPS compounds.
