About Gushegu Municipal District
Gushegu Municipal Assembly—often referred to as Gishegu Municipality—is one of the sixteen administrative districts in Ghana’s Northern Region. It was carved out of the former Gushegu-Karaga District in 2004 and elevated to municipal status that same year. The capital town, Gushegu, lies approximately 114 kilometers northeast of Tamale, the regional capital.
Covering a land area of about 2,674.1 square kilometers, the municipality comprises 395 communities and shares boundaries with Karaga to the west, Saboba and Chereponi to the east, East Mamprusi and Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo to the north, and Yendi and Mion to the south. As of the 2021 census, the population stands at 153,965, with a slight female majority.
