About Gomoa East Municipal District
Gomoa East District: A Rising Metropolis Shaping the Future of Central Region
Gomoa East District has emerged as a dynamic force in local governance and development. Originally carved out of the larger Gomoa District in 2008, and later restructured in 2018 under Legislative Instrument L.I. 2340, the district now boasts a population of 308,697 and a growing reputation for innovation and inclusivity. Its capital, Potsin, serves as the administrative and developmental nerve center.
The district’s elevation to metropolitan status in November 2024 marked a turning point, positioning Gomoa East as the second metropolis in the region after Cape Coast. This upgrade has intensified efforts to modernize infrastructure, expand social services, and attract investment.
Education has seen a surge in investment. Classroom blocks have been constructed in Potsin, Amoanda, Tekyiam, and Anapansu, while dormitory facilities at Fettehman SHS and Potsin T.I. Ahmadiyya SHS have eased congestion and improved student welfare. Desks and learning materials have been distributed across schools, thanks to collaborative efforts between the Assembly and local MPs.
Healthcare delivery is also on the rise. CHPS compounds have been completed in Kweikrom, Dabanyin, and Dampaase, with ongoing projects in Buduburam, Kobena Andoh, and Panfokrom. The district has also equipped St. Gregory Hospital with wheelchairs and hospital beds, reinforcing its commitment to accessible health services.
Water and sanitation initiatives have expanded potable water access to communities like Akotsi, Kojo-Oku, and Buduburam. Biogas toilet facilities are under construction in strategic locations, including Potsin Junction and Fettehman SHS, while Digni-loo toilets have been introduced in Kofi Ahor and Tekyiam.
Road infrastructure has not been left behind. Major reshaping works are underway in Nyanyano, Buduatta, and Potsin, with culverts constructed in Dominase, Buduburam, and Fetteh Kakraba to ease transportation and reduce flooding.
The district’s embrace of the One District, One Factory initiative has led to the establishment of several industrial ventures, boosting employment and local commerce. Electricity extension projects and support for police patrols have further enhanced security and mobility.
