About Ga West Municipal Assembly

The Ga West Municipal Assembly is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the 29 MMDAs within the Greater Accra Region.

Established as part of Ghana’s decentralization and local government reform programme, the Assembly was carved out of the erstwhile Ga Municipal District, which was created in 1988. In 2004, the eastern part of the district was split to create the Ga East District, with the remaining section becoming Ga West District.

Further restructuring took place on 29 February 2008 when the western portion was carved out to form the first Ga South Municipal District, with Weija as its capital. This Ga South District was again divided in 2018 into Weija-Gbawe and a new Ga South District with Ngleshie Amanfro as its capital. That same year, Ga West was elevated to a municipal assembly status, becoming the Ga West Municipal District. On 15 March 2018, the eastern part of Ga West was also split off to create the Ga North Municipal District, leaving the current configuration of Ga West Municipal District, with Amasaman as its capital.

The municipality is geographically located in the western part of the Greater Accra Region, within latitude 5°35′N and 5°29′N, and longitude 0°10′W and 0°24′W. It shares boundaries with Ga East Municipal and Accra Metropolitan Assembly to the east, Akwapim South District to the north, and Ga South and Ga Central Municipalities to the south. It covers a total land area of approximately 284.08 square kilometres and comprises about 412 communities.

According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Ga West has a population of 314,299, consisting of 155,543 males and 158,756 females.

Administratively, the municipality is made up of 17 Electoral Areas, grouped under four Zonal Councils

2.    Nsakina Community Library Project: A literacy and learning initiative that aims to promote reading culture, especially among youth. When completed, the facility will offer access to books, digital resources, and educational programmes for local students.

3.    Mayera Affordable Housing Project: This major housing development will provide cost-effective, decent accommodation for low- to middle-income earners and support the growing demand for homes in the expanding Mayera community.

4.    China Mall – Amasaman Branch: A major retail development contributing to commercial vibrancy in the municipality, creating jobs and attracting visitors from neighbouring districts.

These projects reflect the Ga West Municipal Assembly’s commitment to inclusive development, service delivery, and economic growth. With a focus on infrastructure, health, housing, and education, the Assembly continues to position itself as a forward-looking, people-centred local authority.
