About Fanteakwa South District

Fanteakwa South District: Advancing Development Through Strategic Leadership

The Fanteakwa South District, located in the heart of Ghana’s Eastern Region, was officially carved out of the former Fanteakwa District in 2018 through Legislative Instrument (L.I 2345). With Osino as its administrative capital, the district spans a land area of 460 square kilometers and lies within longitudes 0032.5’ west and latitudes 6015’ north and 6010’ south. It shares boundaries with Kwahu South District to the north, Fanteakwa North District to the west, Abuakwa South District to the south, and Atiwa East District to the east.

Strategically positioned and rich in agricultural potential, Fanteakwa South is predominantly rural, with Osino serving as its only urban enclave. The district’s economy is largely driven by farming, complemented by small-scale mining and trading activities. Despite infrastructural challenges, the Assembly has made notable strides in improving education, sanitation, water access, and environmental protection.

Recent development efforts have focused on tangible, community-centered projects. In Akyem Hemang, the District Assembly, in collaboration with the Member of Parliament, initiated the construction of a six-unit classroom block and a twelve-seater W/C toilet facility at the D/A Primary School. This project aims to enhance access to quality education and sanitation for pupils and staff.

At Pimpimso, a mechanized borehole with four standpipes was commissioned through a partnership between the Assembly and World Vision. This intervention has significantly improved access to clean water, reducing the burden on residents and promoting public health.

The Osino Market Centre underwent a major upgrade with the installation of concrete pavement blocks, a septic system, and a water tank. These enhancements have revitalized local commerce, improved hygiene, and created a more conducive environment for traders and shoppers.

In a bold move to address illegal mining, the District Chief Executive led a high-impact dialogue with gold miners operating in the district. The outcome was a decisive agreement to halt mining activities near water bodies, residential zones, and farmlands. A task force was activated to enforce these regulations, safeguarding the district’s environment and public health.

At the helm of these initiatives is Hon. Mercy Korang, the District Chief Executive of Fanteakwa South. Confirmed in May 2025 with unanimous support from Assembly Members, Hon. Korang has emerged as a symbol of inclusive leadership and development-focused governance. Her academic journey began at Effiduase Presby Junior High School, continued through S.D.A Senior High School in Asokore–Koforidua, and culminated at Presby University College in Kwahu Abetifi. She currently resides in Koforidua.

Hon. Korang’s leadership is defined by transparency, accountability, and a commitment to unity across political lines. At her confirmation ceremony, she pledged to dedicate thirty percent of her salary to women’s empowerment initiatives—a gesture that resonated deeply with constituents and earned national recognition.

Fanteakwa South District continues to chart a path toward inclusive development, driven by visionary leadership and community participation. With strategic projects underway and a committed administration at the helm, the district is poised to become a model of rural transformation in Ghana’s Eastern Region.
