Development and Grassroots Empowerment in Ejisu

The Ejisu Municipal Assembly, one of Ghana’s 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), is part of the 43 MMDAs in the Ashanti Region, with Ejisu as its administrative capital.

Renowned for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant tourist attractions, the municipality is especially celebrated for its booming kente weaving industry, which continues to shape local identity and economic vitality.

Covering approximately 1,782.2 square kilometers—about 10% of the Ashanti Region’s landmass—Ejisu ranks as the fifth-largest district in the region. Strategically located in the central part of Ashanti, the municipality offers immense potential for the establishment of an inland port to serve Ghana’s northern corridor. It lies between longitudes 1°5W and 1°39’W and latitudes 7°9’N and 7°36’N.

Ejisu shares borders with six districts: Sekyere East and Kwabre East to the northeast and northwest, Bosomtwe and Asante Akim South to the south, Asante Akim North to the east, and Kumasi Metropolitan to the west. According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, the municipality has a population of 180,723—comprising 87,836 males and 92,887 females.
Under the leadership of Deaconess Jerryne Asante, the current Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Ejisu.

The municipality has witnessed notable progress in infrastructure and social development. Her tenure has been marked by strategic initiatives that reflect her commitment to grassroots empowerment and inclusive governance.
Among the key development projects are:

●    The execution of 32 road rehabilitation projects across Ejisu, covering over 247 kilometers and improving access in communities such as Achiakrom, Abankro, Donyina, Onwe, and Adako Jachie.

●    The commissioning of a 4-unit classroom block at Tikrom M/A Basic School, reinforcing the Free SHS policy and enhancing educational access.

●    A tree planting initiative along the Kumasi–Ejisu corridor, promoting environmental sustainability and urban beautification.

●    The establishment of a Business Resource Center, offering training, advisory services, and access to credit for local entrepreneurs—part of a broader poverty alleviation strategy.

Deaconess Jerryne Asante’s leadership has also translated into political gains. Her tireless engagement with the grassroots led to a significant increase in NDC votes in the 2020 elections—from approximately 14,000 to over 18,000. This upward momentum underscores her effectiveness in mobilizing community support and delivering tangible results.

Her appointment as MCE is both a recognition of her dedication and a strategic asset for the NDC as it prepares for the 2028 elections. With her proven track record, she is well-positioned to strengthen the party’s base in Ejisu and contribute meaningfully to national development.
